A magician-prisoner pleads to the spirit realm for vengeance. Against all odds, they hear him. A young Blithe Haven girl becomes host to powers unseen in millenniums, since ‘the lull’, the end of the age of magic and heroism. The stage is set for a clash of words where new heroes will sow their names in legend.
“It may not be what you planned for your life, but you were chosen for a reason,” the prisoner tells Sayra Beech, host to this dormant power. It finally makes sense: the nightmares, the hallucinations—omens from the spirit world.
Sayra has reservations about this new gift. She’s having a difficult time as it is. As the daughter of the Head Magistrate, Blithe Haven’s most powerful noble, she is heavily weighed down with responsibilities and expectations. Also, her guilty conscience breeds nightmares and hallucinations. They stem from her forced participation in Blithe Haven's Harvest Festival—a festival of ritual human sacrifices to their Sun Goddess.
As a last resort, Sayra goes on a journey with a colorful cast of unlikely companions. In this much-needed diversion, she searches for answers to her dilemma. But not everything is as it seems. Not even love can save her from confronting and embracing her great destiny.
“Trust in yourself and your special fate,” she is told. “Think of it as a circle of experience. Go too far in one direction, and you'll break through. You'll end up where you started, but with a new view.”
A battered world gives way to idolators, group think, and worship of a man forged in legend.
"War is life, and peace is death!"
'The Tyrant' has conquered much of the world. In its place, he created a dark, cult-like society: the Glorious New World of Tomorrow. But, as a nightmare world, it doesn't live up to the lofty name. His 16-year Great War left much of the land in chaos and its people in moral degeneration or idolatry.
Scarlett Morrow, a worker in the Tyrant's Aesthetics Propaganda Unit, feels her directors at the underground academy underestimated her. She harbors aspirations beyond her modest expectations as a petty Tyrant’s servant. Determined, she puts herself to the test to see if she’s worthy of transcending herself. But navigating the wrecked world on the outside isn’t what she expected. It tests her endurance and challenges her to see this new world with open eyes, beyond her propaganda-based education.
